The Biological Productivity of the Ocean
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ocean productivity largely refers to the production of organic matter by “phytoplankton,” plants suspended in the ocean, most of which are single-celled. Phytoplankton are “photoautotrophs,” harvesting light to convert inorganic to organic carbon, and they supply this organic carbon to diverse “heterotrophs,” organisms that obtain their energy solely from the respiration of organic matter. Open ocean heterotrophs include bacteria as well as more complex singleand multi-celled “zooplankton” (floating animals), “nekton” (swimming organisms, including fish and marine mammals), and the “benthos” (the seafloor community of organisms).

Objective(s): The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Squid ink polysaccharide (SIP) on prevention of autophagy and oxidative stress induced by cyclophosphamide (CP) in Leydig cells of mice. Materials and Methods: Examination of reproductive organ exponents, abnormal sperm rate, activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), and histolog...
متن کاملShort communication:GIS based hydro-biological parameter approach for identification of productive zones in Nanak Sagar Reservoir of Uttarakhand, India
An attempt was made to identify the productivity level of different zones of Nanak Sagar reservoir through the application of Geographical Information System (GIS). Based on biological, hydrological and soil parameters, thematic layers were created by interpolating point wise annual average value of given parameters and three models were developed using the weighted overlay method in ArcGIS v.1...
متن کاملOcean dynamics, not dust, have controlled equatorial Pacific productivity over the past 500,000 years.
Biological productivity in the equatorial Pacific is relatively high compared with other low-latitude regimes, especially east of the dateline, where divergence driven by the trade winds brings nutrient-rich waters of the Equatorial Undercurrent to the surface. The equatorial Pacific is one of the three principal high-nutrient low-chlorophyll ocean regimes where biological utilization of nitrat...
متن کاملEffects of patchy ocean fertilization on atmospheric carbon dioxide and biological production
[1] Increasing oceanic productivity by fertilizing nutrient-rich regions with iron has been proposed as a mechanism to offset anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide. Earlier studies examined the impact of large-scale fertilization of vast reaches of the ocean for long periods of time. We use an ocean general circulation model to consider more realistic scenarios involving fertilizing small r...
متن کاملA novel spatio-temporal scale based on ocean currents unravels environmental drivers of reproductive timing in a marine predator.
Life-history strategies have evolved in response to predictable patterns of environmental features. In practice, linking life-history strategies and changes in environmental conditions requires comparable space-time scales between both processes, a difficult match in most marine system studies. We propose a novel spatio-temporal and dynamic scale to explore marine productivity patterns probably...
